On the grounds of the Boboli Gardens, it served as the city defence as well as a spot for Galileo's astronomical observations.
Forte di Belvedere is the second and largest fortress to be constructed in Florence. It was built on the instruction of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici by Buontalenti between 1590 and 1595. It is located on the highest hill of the Boboli gardens on south of the River Arno. Originally built to protect the Medici family and the local government if the city was under siege, the fort also served as a troops garrison. Galileo used the fortress for astronomical observations.
Forte di Belvedere offers the visitor the chance to see a great example of both Renaissance and Military architecture, it affords some of the most commanding views over Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Today it is used as an exhibition centre, hosting exclusive events, celebrity weddings and art exhibitions throughout the year.
