A perfect vantage point to view Florence, great architecture, history and a nice place to relax while sipping herbal tea or liqueurs made by the monks.

Know Before You Go

The view from the steps leading from the Piazzale Michelangelo offers some of the best panoramic views of the city. The frescoes in the vault by Taddeo Gaddi should be viewed, and if you lucky when you visit the Olivetan monastery you may hear the Gregorian chanting of the monks which is an experience you will treasure forever.
Wear comfortable footwear as this is quite a walk.
The monks who live there sing Gregorian Chants at Vespers each day at 5:30pm in the summer and at 4:30 during the winter.
There is a shop from which the monks sell locally made liqueur, honey and green teas.
The climb up from Piazzale Michelangelo to the church may be too much effort with small children.

Beautiful views

San Miniato al Monte stands on top of one of the highest city points. Just past Piazzale Michelangelo climb the steps and look down on the city of Florence below. It is one of the most scenic churches in Italy and offers some of the finest Romanesque architecture you will see.

History of the church

There is a fascinating history behind the basilica, and the mosaic which depicts St. Miniato is well worth viewing. St. Miniato was Minas, an Armenian prince turned hermit, who was beheaded by the emperor for being a Christian. The legend is that he picked up his head and walked up the hill across the Arno river, to his hermitage, where now the church stands.

Incomplete Bell Tower

The campanile or bell tower was never finished after rebuilding began, to replace the original tower that collapsed in 1499. Interestingly the church saw action as a defensive position in the Florence siege of 1530 when Michelangelo covered the facade with mattresses to protect it from artillery fire.

Liqueurs, Honey, Herbal Teas

In addition to the beautiful Romanesque structure, there is the cloister which dates back to 1443 and the Olivetan monastery which adjoins the basilica. The monks make their famous liqueurs there along with herbal teas and honey which are sold next to the church.
