The most beautiful bell tower in Italy!

Giotto's Bell Tower is situated next to the Duomo Cathedral. It is one of the four principal monuments in the Piazza. Measuring 84.7 metres in height and 15 metres in breadth, it is a unique example of Gothic architecture.

Constructed in shades of green, red and white marble like the Italian flag, it has been considered to be the most beautiful campanile in the country. Up to the time of Giotto's death in 1337 he had only completed a section of the tower as far as the hexagonal panels, it was continued by Andrea Pisano and Alberto Arnaldi.

Climbing up the Campanile?

Climbing up the bell tower is not difficult, there are many rest stops, one at each of the 7 bells. And the views from the top and from each landing are worth the climb. There is a lot of artwork you will see on the climb but note that the significant ones - the tiles and life-size sculptures - are very accurate copies. The originals are preserved in the Duomo Museum.

Key Highlights

The Campanile designed by Giotto is a stunning piece of architecture situated in the UNESCO Heritage square which houses the Duomo and the Baptistery. It is hard to miss.

The decorative hexagonal panels tell the story of the concept of the order of the Universe and the Redemption of Mankind - these are depicted in the reliefs. You can climb the 414 steps to the top if you feel fit enough.
