The Gallery of Modern Art has a fine collection of sculptures and paintings dating from the late 18th century.
The museums are closed on the first and last Monday of each month.
A ticket can be purchased for all of the galleries combined. There are many cafes and restaurants just outside the palace.

Home to many museums

The Pitti Palace or Palazzo Pitti as it is locally known houses several important museums including the Gallery of Modern Art, Carriage Museum, Silver Museum, Palatina Gallery, Boboli Garden and the Costume Gallery to name a few.

And private apartments

It was constructed in the second half of the 15th century and is also home to several private apartments. The rooms on the left wing belonged to the Grand Duke and the ones on the right to the heir, their wives had separate living quarters. The rooms are incredibly well preserved with gilded ceilings, artwork and sparkling chandeliers.

Famous occupants and History

Originally built by the ambitious banker Luca Pitti in a quest to rival and exceed the Medici Palace, the building was sold into the Medici family by a later generation Pitti. And in the late 18th century, Napoleon briefly occupied the palace which functioned as a power base for a unified Italy.
