One of Rome's ancient Papal basilicas, in a quiet area outside the Vatican but owned by the Holy See.
Basilica Papale San Paolo fuori le Mura is St. Paul Outside the Walls, it is one of the city's four ancient major Papal basilicas. Unlike many of the others this basilica is in Rome and not Vatican City, however, it is still owned by the Holy See. The beautiful facade is truly awe-inspiring, it is a little quieter than some of the other Papal Basilicas but this only adds to its appeal.
The interior is breathtaking and the cloisters of the monastery of San Paolo fuori le mura are wonderful to walk through. You can transport yourself back centuries and take in the majesty of this wonderful structure. The domed ceiling is a sight to behold with the Apse mosaic dating back to 1220 it has vibrant depictions of the Apostles Peter, Paul, Andrew and Luke.
