Located in the southwest end of Passeig del Born, Santa Maria del Mar (Our Lady of the Sea) is one of Barcelona’s finest Catalan Gothic churches. Construction started in 1329 and was completed in only 54 years, an amazing feat at the time! Greatly representative of Catalan Gothic architecture is the three facades with a prevalence of horizontal lines, solid buttresses, lots of bare surfaces, and octagonal pillars. Inside the simple shape and sense of space are two key features of Catalan Gothic architecture. One of the differences between Santa Maria del Mar and other large Gothic churches in Barcelona is its lack of excessive decoration. South of the church, just across from it is the former El Fossar de les Moreres (The Mulberry Cemetery), which was the site of a Roman cemetery but is now a seemingly anonymous sunken square. Santa Maria del Mar is definitely an interesting choice for those wanting to visit one of Barcelona’s Gothic churches.
