Showcasing Barcelona’s days as the hub of Spain’s seafaring empire, the Museu Maritim is located in the old shipyards and gives visitors an insight to the maritime history and the importance of shipping. One of the highlights of the museum is the full sized replica of Don Juan of Austria’s 16th century flagship, The Royal Gallery. Using different items to show the history such as historical objects, ship models, films, and posters, there is lots to see! They also offer two interesting exhibitions, one of surfboards and another inside shipping containers. The shipping containers show seven ships and their stories. Before or after visiting the museum, grab a bite to eat at their café, which offers courtyard seating, giving diners a view of a replica of the Ictíneo, one of the world’s first submarines which was invented and built in 1858 by Narcis Monturiol, a Catalan polymath.
