Built by Miquel Utrillo and Xavier Nogues, and designed by architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch for the 1929 World Fair, Poble Espanyol is a charming Spanish village featuring traditional buildings and squares from every region in Spain. Copied from the walled cities of Avila are tublar towers at the entrance to the village. In the center is the Plaza Mayor, a typical Castilian square, which brings together Majorcan markets, Baroque Valencia facades, and Galician houses. Off the square is a small whitewashed street reminiscent of the Arcos de la Frontera in Andalucia, and a 16th century Toledo inspired House of Chains. Within the village are various bars and restaurants, a flamenco tablao, plenty of shops selling Spanish crafts and gallery featuring contemporary art from Picasso, Miro, Dali, and other Spanish artists from the 1950s to today. This small village is a collection of Spain’s architectural history in its own right.
