Barcelona Top Ten
Europe's largest food market is a foodies' paradise. You can duck in for fresh juice or spend half a day eating and walking around the stalls. La Boqueria is still an authentic, local favorite despite all the tourist hordes.

Know Before You Go

It is a challenge to get a seat at one of the many Tapas Bars.
The produce is fresh, lots of locals buy their staples here.
Some parts are very crowded with tourists. If you have the time, head for the inside areas to feel more local.
Carry your inner photographer with you, the stalls and food displays are a work of art.

Proudly local, since 1217!

Built over a long period of time, from 1840 to 1914, on the site of the former St. Joseph monastery, Mercat de la Boqueria is Europe’s largest food market. Apparently, there has been a market on this very spot since 1217, and despite being a tourist attraction now, locals have always come to shop at this Barcelonan market.

Walk around, dine in or take out

Walk among the fruit and vegetable stalls with orderly stacks of Montserrat tomatoes and other produce, or along the fish stalls with sacks of snails and razor clams. Of course don’t forget this is where the locals come to shop, so don’t touch anything you don’t want to buy, and ask before talking photos!

If you want to grab a bite, without having to cook it yourself, there are several places to eat that open around lunchtime. Try out some of Catalonia’s specialties, such as bacalla salat or the staple cargols (snails).

Key Highlights

One of Europe’s largest food markets, Mercat de la Boqueria is a great place to shop side by side with the locals. Or you could grab a bite to eat at one of the prepared food stalls.
