Originally the gardens of a royal palace, the Retiro is Madrid’s green oasis located right in the center of Madrid. The park is spread over 130 hectares with 15,000 trees, an area for perennials, Andalusian greenery and a rose garden. The park also houses historical buildings, marble monuments, landscaped lawns, boating lake and cafes.
The Lake and Crystal Palace
The highlight of the park is the Estanque - the artificial lake - surrounded by the magnificent monuments of Alfonso XII over on the east side. In the central zone is the Crystal Palace, a beautiful Romanesque hall of metal and glass, originally a greenhouse, but now part of the facilities of the Museum Reina Sofía. On the western wing sits the Bosque Del Recuerdo, the memorial for the 2004 bombings that killed 191 people.
Many things to do, great for the family
